Your Car Keys: A Risky Business You Can't Ignore

05/20/2025

If car keys had frequent flyer miles, mine would be platinum by now—between the couch cushions, the fridge, and every pocket I own. But while my keys love to travel, I'd rather they didn't take my car with them!

Your car keys aren't just for starting the engine; they're the key to your car's security. With vehicle theft on the rise – about 85 cars stolen every day between October and December 2024 – it pays to be extra careful.

Think about it:

  • Car Washes: Who really has your keys while your car's getting cleaned? It is your responsibility to ensure that the washing company stores the keys safely and only hand the keys back to you. Choose reputable car washes with good security.
  • Moving Provinces: Is your car actually covered if something happens during when you hand over the keys to the movers? Double-check with your advisor before it goes. Don't forget to tell your advisor to update to the new risk address.
  • Airport Parking: Valet services mean handing over your keys to drivers who may damage it or through carelessness, expose your vehicle to theft. Make sure your insurance covers potential damage or theft.
  • Designated Drivers: Great idea, but is your insurance comprehensive enough to cover them? Even though most policies cover additional licensed drivers, check with your Advisor. And remember, never drink and drive – your insurance won't cover accidents if you're intoxicated.
  • Lost Keys: Modern car keys are expensive to replace. Does your policy have "all risks" cover for lost or stolen keys? With keyless entry and start, ensure you have a routine as to were you keep your keys to prevent accidental loss.

Your car's safety starts with you. Take a few simple precautions and talk to your advisor to make sure you're fully covered. It's a small effort for peace of mind!
